![]() In an article recently published in the Re+View real estate magazine, Herndon's Mayor discusses big changes planned for the town of Herndon. In a town once known for its small dairy farming industry, the proximity to the rail line helped foster its economy. Herndon once again hopes to ride the local rails to economic success. The new Phase II of the Silver Line includes a stop in Herndon. This should help elevate the town on many levels. At least that is what the Mayor and Town Council are hoping for. Mayor Lisa Merkel is quoted saying that they have just rebranded and are proud of the new position statement. "A next generation small town pulses off the edge of Fairfax County. Turn off the highway and find yourself in a place that welcomes innovators, risk-takers, history seekers and family-keepers. This is where the roots of the history help to grow the ideas of tomorrow." The town of Herndon is a walkable urban place. The trails are awesome and have recently installed lighting along the Washington and Old Dominion trail. When you are on the W&OD, you are in Herndon when you reach the lights. The future master plan includes development of multi-family, retail, restaurants and office use. Mayor Merkel says they want Herndon to be knows as "the Next Generation Small Town". With the new Silver Line coming into town, the Mayor hopes to attract people who can easily walk to town from the bus and metro stops. The article lists some great accolades that Herndon has received: Best Place to Raise Kids, Bloomberg Business Week. One of America's Friendliest Towns, Forbes.com. Best Places to Live, Money Magazine, CNNMoney. Best Places to Live for the Rich and Single, Money Magazine, CNNMoney. There are many cool events that happen throughout the year in the Town of Herndon. You can find a farmers market, the Herndon Festival, Friday Night Live concerts (free concerts all summer long on the library lawn), ArtSpace Herndon, historic train depot, Christmas tree sales (where Elvis buys his tree!), Jimmy's Old Town Tavern and many other shops and restaurants. One of my son's favorite spots is Green Lizard Cycling. This shop mixes his 2 favorite things; bikes and coffee. Check it out: http://www.greenlizardcycling.com/. Some cool statistics about the town:
